The racket of 10,000 or so pipers and drummers tuning up at once is a difficult sound to describe. It is loud and whiny and reminiscent of — though slightly more melodic than — a flock of Canada geese caught in gale-force winds.

Yesterday, under cloudy skies, scores of bagpipe and drum bands marched up the Avenue of the Americas in honor of Tartan Day, the Scottish day of independence. There was more plaid on display than at a seniors’ golf tournament, and what with the breeze working mischief on thousands of kilts, there were plenty of hairy knees to be seen as well.
